On April 3, 2025, Neshan Gunasekera (Chief Executive Officer and Councilor of the World Future Council) will share his experiences on how you can prepare for a career at the interface between science and policy.
In the Science and Policy Talk series professionals working in different roles at the interface between science and policy explain how they contribute to linking science and policy and give us insights in their career pathway. This talk series is an offer as part of the PhD program in Science and Policy.
Neshan Gunasekera is the Chief Executive Officer and Councilor of the World Future Council based in Hamburg. He holds a master’s in international relations, specializing in Sustainable Development and is formerly an international civil service officer, advocate and peace builder from Sri Lanka. He has completed specialized training in conflict transformation, peace and environmental stewardship and co-designed several training programs which attempt to bridge science, with indigenous knowledge and legal systems for transformational change.

In this talk, Neshan Gunasekera will speak about his experiences with the World Future Council since its establishment in 2007 and his own career trajectory to the role of CEO, of this esteemed Council, a role which he has undertaken recently. During a journey of over two decades, beginning in the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, Neshan will provide some insights of his experiential learning journey across various parts of our world covering some key organizations, including the United Nations, International Union for the Conservation of Nature and other organizations that he is part of that draws from the Science-Policy interface and its link to his current portfolio at the World Future Council.
In particular, he will provide insights as to the importance of bridging the learning within the sciences, with other knowledge systems and achieving Earth Trusteeship, a longer journey that he is traveling and invite you all to walk alongside him during this talk and thereafter.
