Access a remote linux desktop with ThinLinc
We are using a solution based on ThinLinc from Cendio to easily connect to a remote Linux desktop inside the D-MATH network from anywhere. If you are connecting via Wi-Fi/wireless or from outside you will need a VPN connection to the ETH.
Requirements
- A working VPN connection to the D-MATH network
- A ThinLinc client for your operating system (external link)
Note: on our managed computers, the ThinLinc client is already installed
If you do not want or cannot install the ThinLinc client on your (private) device, you may try to use it via browser at this URL: https://tango.math.ethz.ch (the VPN connection is still needed!). This solution may also works on a tablet.
Connection details
After you are connected to the network (or via VPN) and have started the ThinLinc Client you just need to type in the Server (tango.math.ethz.ch), your ETH username and you D-MATH password and then click on Connect.

After a while you can choose a desktop environment that you want to connect to.
Hints and tips
- If you are disconnected because of a network problem, you can simply reconnect. You will then be connected to the existing session.
- If you press F8 inside the session you will get a menu where you can disconnect the session without logging out.
- If your session hangs for some reason then you have to disconnect and reconnect to a fresh session by enabling the option “End existing session” on the login window.
