Printing at D-MATH

General Information

The main features of the ETH Print Service are print from WLAN, VPN and “file upload”, secure printing using the “follow me” printer queues card-ethz or card-hp, comfortable copying and scan to email or USB stick.

To release print-jobs (sent for instance to card-ethz or card-hp), use the copier or scan a document you will have to authenticate to the printer, either

  • with the ETH-Card (*) or
  • with your ETH account and password for e-mail (Active Directory)

*) Note: the very first time you have to “activate the ETH-Card” by logging in to www.print.ethz.ch.

Printing from your office’s computer

What’s new? When you print (at least for the first time) to one of the new printers, for instance card-ethz or card-hp, you will be asked to authenticate. Depending on the operating system that you are using (Linux or Mac OS X) it will look different:

Fedora Linux

First you need to setup the authentication to the ETHZ with Kerberos.

  • Click on the top right corner to get into the settings menu:

  • Go to the “Online Accounts” settings:

  • Add a new Enterprise Login (Kerberos) Account

  • The pricipal is your username@d.ethz.ch

  • Enter your AD (Mail) Password and choose to save it

  • Now you are able to print
Errors

Sometimes it can happen that you are not authenticated anymore, if you can’t print verify the Kerberos Account. You may see the following and you can “Sign In” again to fix the problem:

Mac OS X (10.7+)

After printing a login window will pop up and you will have to enter your ETH username and e-mail password (and if desired select also the “Remember this password in my keychain”-checkbox):

Printing via SSH

For instance if you are connected via SSH from a private Notebook of from a Notebook with a local Home and want to print something, you may be asked to use the command klogin to authenticate:

Other useful commands

Show pending print-job on the local print-server:

$ lpstat -l

Delete print-job from the local print-server:

$ lprm JOBID

Check/show your kerberos-ticket. This exists if we you are correctly authenticated to the Active Directory:

$ klist

Printing from your private computer

If you do not want to configure a printer or you have not enough rights to do so, we suggest you to print via “file upload” using following website:

However if you wish a more comfortable printing environment, you should install the printer locally, following the detailed instructions below.

Please note: we strongly recommend to use the card-hp printer queue (and not printing directly to a printer), with the following default settings: black&white, recycled paper and duplex (two sided printing).

Linux
Mac OS X

We suggest using a tool provided by the ETH IT Services: ETH Printers

This tool installs the necessary drivers and a utility called ‘ETH Printers’ in the Applications –> Utilities folder.

Instructions

Download and install the software from the ETH IT Services using the following link:

Start the program “ETH Printers”.

The next dialog is the printer and building selection dialog. You can either select a “Specific printer” in a building (usually HG) or the generic “Follow me” printer (use card-hp for best results). Click “Install Printer”.

For FIM guests: Please use the printer p-hg-hp014 in G 39.1
