Migration of email filter to Exchange Online Protection
As part of the migration of personal mailboxes to the cloud, the email filter (spam filter) has been switched from MailCleaner to Exchange Online Protection (EOP).
The migration affects all users who work with ETH Zurich’s email service. Within ETH, see also «Emails to be in the cloud» from 4 June 2024.
A step into the future
The migration of the email filter to Exchange Online Protection (EOP) is an important step towards increasing the security and efficiency of your and ETH’s email communication. EOP offers powerful protection against threats such as spam, phishing and malware.
The switch to EOP means that we are replacing the existing email filter solution with a modern, cloud-based security platform. This means:
- improved protection
- lower maintenance costs
- seamless integration into the existing Microsoft 365 environment
The system uses machine learning and real-time data to recognise and ward off threats at an early stage. In addition to technical advantages, it also improves the user experience. Thanks to automated management and continuous adaptation to new threats, it is designed to make emails reliable and secure.
What will change as a result of the migration to «Exchange Online Protection»?
EOP has state-of-the-art AI-supported filter mechanisms and is adapted 24/7 to the current threat situation. However, the options for intervening in the configuration of the filter on our side are limited.
What do I need to do or know after the email filter migration?
- You can reach the new quarantine page via: «https://security.microsoft.com/«
– Email & collaboration – Review – Quarantine or directly via: «https://security.microsoft.com/quarantine« - As before, quarantine emails contain a direct link to the quarantine website.
- Access to the old MailCleaner quarantine will remain available for the time being and is still fully functional.
- The settings in MailCleaner will not be migrated to EOP. Any adjustments made must, if possible, be set up again in EOP.
- The tag-only feature is no longer available in EOP.
- Personal allow and deny lists are managed in Outlook or webmail (junk mail settings).
- In contrast to MailCleaner, not only incoming but also outgoing emails are filtered. Even internal email traffic is subjected to some basic checks.
