Which device to use when studying at ETH?

IT Services regularly get asked these questions:

“My daughter and my son is beginning their bachelor studies at ETH Zurich in September. We now want to buy an IT device (iPad, laptop, etc.). Is there anything we should bear in mind or a recommendation from the ETH about compatibility and suitability for studying?” Thank you very much!”

IT Services at ETH Zurich (ITS) is the wrong contact for this. ITS supports ETH teaching, research and administration through the provision of services in the field of IT and communication technologies. It operates the necessary comprehensive ETH infrastructures, information systems and applications to this end.

When it comes to studying, we recommend taking a look at our IT brochure for students

High quality laptops, tablets and accessories for studying

The best thing to do is to take a look at “Project Neptun” for IT devices. Apart from the actual purchase, it also provides support services at the Neptun Help Points with support laptops and laptop leasing. There are two sales windows a year: autumn and spring windows. The next “Project Neptun autumn window 2021” will open on 6 September and run until 4 October 2021.

In addition, there is a showroom on the ETH campus at Hönggerberg.

All ETH members have been able to buy discounted and carefully selected laptops since 2003. In summer 2021, for the first time there will be an additional sales window expressly for those coming from upper secondary and vocational schools.

From its foundation, to the present day

Twenty years of “Project Neptun”: That means 20 years of discounted laptops, 20 years of support by students for students, 20 years of expertise and advice.

Furthermore, what perhaps not everyone realises; before “Project Neptun” became an ETH spin-off in August 2011, it was part of IT Services.
