The Calculus service moves to Euler

Calculus is a MATLAB Distributed Computing Server (MDCS) service for the ETH community.
This service allows researchers to offload heavy computations onto a cluster directly from their workstations. It expands the reach of cluster computing to those users who can not use a cluster in the traditional batch mode.

Start

The Calculus MDCS service started on a dedicated 256-core cluster made of sixteen 16-core compute nodes, each with 128 GB of RAM.
After two years of successful service we have now migrated the Calculus MDCS service from the old cluster to the Euler cluster. Researchers can therefore continue using the Calculus MDCS service while taking advantage of the greater resources available on Euler. The number of cores available is now more than 100 times greater. There are multiple fast storage options, including storage on ID-SD NAS. Combined with a faster network, both transferring and consuming data is now faster.

For us the original Calculus cluster served as a testbed and proving ground for many technologies that we now use in the Euler cluster.
These experiences now let us offer an improved service to an even wider community at the ETH.
