Tip: Retrieving files in OneDrive
Deleted a file or folder by mistake? How to get it back.
Important to know: at ETH, we work with the OneDrive for Business, which is different from OneDrive in the «private» Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365).
OneDrive for Business has two recycle bins
A deleted file initially ends up in the first recycle bin (the first-stage recycle bin) where it remains for up to 30 days. After this period, or if the file is deleted from the first recycle bin beforehand, it is moved to the second recycle bin (the second-stage recycle bin). A deleted file remains in the two recycling bins for a maximum of 93 days. For example, if a file is removed from the first recycle bin after 20 days, it will remain in the second recycle bin for a further 73 days.
The second recycle bin can be accessed via the first recycle bin. To access it, users must scroll to the bottom of the first recycle bin to find the link to the second recycle bin.
Difference to the «private» Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365)
The second recycle bin is not available in the OneDrive of the private Office 365. This means that many ETH users are unaware of the second recycle bin.
