3 April 2024: I joined the Digital Humanities Lab at EPFL as a postdoctoral research data engineer. I’m involved in the Parcels of Venice project.

8 March 2024: My dissertation ‘Storytelling with Animated Interactive Objects in Real-time 3D Maps’ is available in the Research Collection of ETH Zurich

20 Februar 2024: I have been appointed to be co-chair of the ICA commission on GeoAI

28 April 2023: Gave a presentation about sphere tracing and deep learning in cartography at the Visualization and MultiMedia Lab, University of Zurich

6 April 2023: Gave a brownbag talk about atlas usability, machine learning and storytelling at the Institute for Interactive Technologies, University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland

2 March 2023: Screenshots of the web applications implemented by students in the course “Application Development in Cartography” are available featuring 3D maps of choice

3 October 2022: Our article Unsupervised Historical Map Registration by a Deformation Neural Network has been accepted for the ACM SIGSPATIAL Workshop on AI for Geographic Knowledge Discovery

19 September 2022: The Master Geomatics curriculum has been revised. Our chair offers the courses Application Development in Cartography and Research Topics in Cartography

10 June 2022: Finished a data science course at ETH where I contributed to a Kaggle challenge by predicting future consumption and prices of electricity in Spain

8 February 2022: Screenshots of the web applications implemented by students in the course “Cartography III” are available featuring 3D maps of change

15 December 2021: Presented how to automatically create 3D representations of human figures on pictorial maps at the International Cartographic Conference in Florence

30 September 2021: The second edition of our Story Atlas of Sustainable Development Goals includes four new story maps created by students in the course “Multimedia Cartography”

10 August 2021: Our article Instance Segmentation, Body Part Parsing, and Pose Estimation of Human Figures in Pictorial Maps has been published in the International Journal of Cartography

14 April 2021: Wrote two stories about how to implement a simple ray marcher in Python using the GPU (Part I, Part II)

13 April 2021: Gave a guest lecture at the German Society of Cartography (DGfK), Dresden Section about augmented reality for printed school atlases

17 March 2021: Participated in the GeoForAll Annual General Meeting to represent our OSGeo lab

12 February 2021: Finished organizing the course “Cartography III” where students created 3D maps for Swiss teenagers

25 January 2021: Created parametric visualizations together with my colleague Raphael Vomsattel, who also processed the data, for two 3D maps about the Covid-19 pandemic in the Atlas of Switzerland

14 October 2020: Gave a short presentation about machine learning activities in our research group at a workshop organized by our department

21-25 September 2020: Attended the virtual EuroCarto conference where I presented a student project on how to augment printed school atlases with thematic 3D maps

11 September 2020: Our article Detection of Pictorial Map Objects with Convolutional Neural Networks has been published in The Cartographic Journal

20 August 2020: The created Story Atlas of Sustainable Development Goals of this year’s Multimedia Cartography course is now publicly available

26 October 2019: The Augmented Reality App for Printed School Atlases made it into Swiss Television

14-19 July 2019: Participated in the International Cartographic Conference in Tokyo where I presented my research on segmenting human figures on maps with convolutional neural networks
