Competence-oriented assessment: Assessments for futur-ready graduates
Assessments drive student learning and form the basis for the most consequential decisions – pass or fail – early in students’ academic careers. Hence, proper alignment of assessments with the disciplinary competencies we intend students to develop is of paramount importance. How will students need to use the knowledge they have acquired, once they leave your course? What kinds of familiar or novel disciplinary problems and challenges should they be able to cope with? How well should students be able to learn from and integrate new information into with what you have taught them? Focusing on such questions can greatly facilitate the valid and meaningful assessment of students’ competencies, and furthermore provide students an effective incentive to engage in authentic and deep learning activities.
