Bettina Dobler&Melanie Ziegler_Midterm Review_Junction of public life

Our interventions are located in the most flooded areas of the kampung melayu. we create new junctions next to the existing main roads which are connected across a large roofsystem. the new roofstructure allowes public life even during the flood season and gives the dense kampung a wide recreaction zone. The streets extend to an open space, wherever our new structure reaches the river front. Here the recreation zone from the roof landspace touches the ground. The riverbank in front of the public places are treated in a strong way. The hard river edge is stepped and generate different spaces with divers functions. Some areas at the river are more private with gardens just for the inhabitants. Here the river bank has a clear edge with the embankment. At some river side the housing zones move back more and give space for a forest garden, that reduce the influence of the flood and helps the river to regenerate.

With our roof path we make sure that the inhabitants have a safe and dry way system trough the time of flooding. The walkable roof landscape is always next to the existing main roads of the block. Down to the river these new streets end up in the public belt. Here are all the public institutions like the school and shops. The river gets more space with the new park. So the flood should never reach again the level of 2007.The new riverfront is more alive with the footpath and there are places for relaxing and for fishing etc.

Bettina Dobler & Melanie Ziegler_first review

We analysed the streets and existing open spaces in our block and based on that research we divided the whole area into smaller subblocks. Every subblock works for his own and has its own water supply and recycling system. All the roofs of one subblock collect the rainwater. The water tank is integrated into an open green space. The access to the tank is ensured during the flood season too, because there is a platform above the normal flood level. On that platform also the public allday life can happen. We have two different circulations which allow that the normal life can go on during the flood season. The different public spaces of every subblock are connected trough the roof path. The second circulation is for the inhabitants. Because the balcony levels are linked to each other. The people have always a safe way up to the roof and to the higher dry land.

Bettina Dobler & Melanie Ziegler_Unit

The concept for our unit is the mobile public space. The unit is made of a concrete grid. The ground floor is completely open and has a temporary use for markets or sport places. Above the normal flood line are two housing floors. There the concrete grid is filled up with a light bamboo construction. The third floor has a semipublic function, because the water tank and all the sanitary services are located there and they are used by 4 or 5 families together. The temporary uses from the ground floor can move up to the roof level during the flood. The connected roofs create an emergency exit to the dry areas. We don’t built new units right next to the river, where the flood goes up to 6 meter.
