Nathalie Ender&Irene Urso_Midterm Review_Framing the Ciliwung river

Our goal was to frame the Ciliwung river by implementing new high density units along the main traffic axes around the river and define a new riverbed area. This belt along the streets acts like an entry gate for the whole Kampung behind. Due to a new secondary road system the structure should spread out towards the river and attract the people and their life activities to follow this movement. At the same time the river should deal in a similar way and the river landscape should grow into the Kampung and form a connection with the urban fabric. Implementing this two new elements creating new qualities framing the Ciliwung we want to provide a base for the development and improvement for the Kampung inside.

To maximize high quality space in the kampung, a reorganization of functions and locations is necessary. We have a focus on open spaces and different strategies are used to increase the amount and quality of these spaces. We made examples of how open spaces in the kampung could be transformed. An open space could either be strengthened as a green space, or used as a site for a high density building. Weak housing structures would be given new use, for example as a base for a garden, that would work as flood protection for houses. We propose high buildings along the depot and towards the river, to create open alleys between water and street.

The more common block is already very urban and should be densified even more by inserting our units in free spaces and by heightening the existing houses. We want to push the urbanisation as close as possible to the river and define a new river edge. The block has been divided in several sub-blocks having a water tank in each collecting the rainwater from the roofs, containers for the garbage collection and a small pipe system, collection the sewage water from the houses discharging into a clarification plant. For the block with the old railway depot the aim is to develop a natural habitat, a recreation zone for the inhabitants and to convert the railway depot into a new railway station and public cultural and community center. The river edge has been modified removing the unsafe housing close to the riverbank and replaced by a green belt.
