Symposium “Fielding Architecture. Feminist Practices for a Decolonized Pedagogy”

08.07.2019

The Fielding Architecture: Feminist Practices for a Decolonised Pedagogy symposium took place at the University of Brighton on 24 & 25 June, 2019.

The interdisciplinary symposium organized by Emma Cheatle, Senior Lecturer, School of Architecture, University of Sheffield and Catalina Mejía Moreno, Senior Lecturer, Theory of Architecture, University of Brighton, explored and questioned the practice of teaching architectural history / theory primarily focused in the UK context, welcoming a debate through dialogues with other protagonists from queer*feminist and critical perspectives, asking:

What forms might a gendered history and theory of architecture take? What are our modes of operation, how do we teach, and how can we learn from others and exchange with critical thinkers both inside and outside the academy? How do we operate within the established frameworks, both historical and institutional, and how can we establish new frameworks and networks that transfer/exchange knowledge between the university and different modes of practice?

Invited speakers:

Katie Lloyd Thomas, Professor of Architectural Theory and History, Newcastle University, UK, Naomi Stead, Professor of Architecture and Head of the Architecture Department at Monash University Faculty of Art Design & Architecture, Australia and Justine Clark, co-founder of Parlour: women, equity, architecture, Melbourne, Australia. With video contributions from Lesley Lokko, Professor and Head of School at the Graduate School of Architecture, University of Johannesburg, South Africa, and Julieanna Preston, Professor of Spatial Practice at Massey University’s College of Creative Arts in Wellington, New Zealand.
