In increasing order of amusement, here is one page of the index of my copy of <a title=\"Reed and Simon\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.ch\/books?id=FfdQAAAAMAAJ&amp;q=reed+and+simon&amp;dq=reed+and+simon&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;hl=en&amp;pgis=1\">Reed and Simons&#8217;s &#8220;Functional Analysis&#8221; <\/a>(Modern Methods of Mathematical Physics, Vol. I)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_665\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-665\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethz.ch\/kowalski\/files\/2009\/03\/reed-simon.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-665\" style=\"border: 1px solid black\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethz.ch\/kowalski\/files\/2009\/03\/reed-simon.jpg\" alt=\"Reed and Simon index\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reed and Simon index<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then here is one page of <a title=\"Goodman and Wallach\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.ch\/books?id=MYFepb2yq1wC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=goodman+wallach&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;hl=en\">Goodman and Wallach&#8217;s &#8220;Representations and invariants of the classical groups&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_666\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-666\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethz.ch\/kowalski\/files\/2009\/03\/goodman-wallach.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-666\" style=\"border: 1px solid black\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethz.ch\/kowalski\/files\/2009\/03\/goodman-wallach.jpg\" alt=\"Page of Goodman-Wallach\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-666\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Page of Goodman-Wallach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>which almost looks normal, except for (as in the red circle I drew) the ligatures &#8220;fi&#8221; which are missing. It must have caused much grinding of teeth to the authors to note that this is not the case all over the book: many of the pages contain an abundance of &#8220;finite&#8221;, &#8220;definition&#8221;, etc, with no error whatsoever. In particular, opening the book at random, you would never detect the problem.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, my masterpiece, if I may say so: my copy of <a title=\"Katz and Sarnak\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/bookstore?s3=katz+sarnak&amp;quicksearch.x=0&amp;quicksearch.y=0&amp;pg1=&amp;s1=&amp;op1=AND&amp;co1=AND&amp;pg2=&amp;s2=&amp;op2=AND&amp;co2=AND&amp;op3=AND&amp;co3=AND&amp;pg3=ALLF&amp;fn=100&amp;d=BOOK&amp;p=1&amp;u=&amp;r=0&amp;l=100&amp;f=S&amp;subject=genint\">Katz and Sarnak&#8217;s &#8220;Random matrices, Frobenius eigenvalues, and monodromy&#8221;<\/a>, where the introduction, from page 5 to page 20, felt that its importance justified that it be repeated after page 228 (up to page 244):<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_667\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-667\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethz.ch\/kowalski\/files\/2009\/03\/katz-sarnak.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-667\" style=\"border: 1px solid black\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethz.ch\/kowalski\/files\/2009\/03\/katz-sarnak.jpg\" alt=\"Two pages of Katz-Sarnak\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-667\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two pages of Katz-Sarnak<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>None of these, however, are as extraordinary as the instance reported in the story &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.ch\/books?id=fT8Plsu_0oQC&amp;pg=PA176\">The Missing Line<\/a>&#8221; of Isaac Bashevis Singer, where an abstruse philosophical sentence <em>&#8212; &#8220;the transcendental unity of the apperception&#8221;<\/em> &#8212; mystically moves from one Yiddish newspaper to another.
