Where research meets software: Swiss RSE Annual Conference 2026
Keynotes, technical presentations, demos and targeted networking: on Monday 31 August, the Swiss Research Software Engineering (RSE) community will meet at ETH Zurich. Attendance is free; registration closes on 17 August 2026.
Modern research would be almost unthinkable without powerful software. But who are the people who translate scientific ideas into reliable, sustainable and reusable code?
On Monday 31 August 2026, the «Swiss RSE Annual Conference» at the CAB building at ETH Zurich will bring together research software engineers from universities, research institutions and industry. Up to 150 participants from Switzerland and abroad are expected to attend.
The focus will be on three key themes
- Research Software Engineering for Open Research Data and Open Science
- Artificial Intelligence in research software development
- Sharing experiences, networking and building a strong RSE community
The day’s programme features keynote speeches, technical presentations and a poster and demo session. Keynote topics include agent-based software development in a research context and the question of why research data is still reused too infrequently despite the FAIR principles. FAIR = Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.
For anyone looking to expand their network in a targeted way
The organisers are offering a voluntary matchmaking service. This will enable, for example, RSEs with similar research areas to exchange ideas, or early-career researchers to network with experienced professionals.
The conference is part of RSE4ORD, a project by the ETH Domain aimed at building a cross-institutional RSE community. Tarun Chadha and Uwe Schmitt (both from ITS SIS) are leading the initiative on behalf of ETH Zurich.
