ETH Zurich’s mobile website now live

″Anyone visiting the ETH Zurich website will now automatically find themselves on the new mobile website at m.ethz.ch. This was designed to make it more comfortable to read content on smartphones and tablets.” (ETH News)

Starting this week, instead of having to see a web site made for a big computer screen on the small smartphone, visitors to the ETH Zurich website are automatically redirected to a new mobile home page. The clear and reader-friendly site includes information about events, catering facilities, and buildings. This information can be found next to the ETH news.

The main navigation has been simplified compared to the desktop version of the site. In the mobile version, only the most important content is shown. Of course the visitor can also view the classic desktop version on a phone if necessary.

High Priority for mobile solutions at ETH

The project “Mobile Web” was introduced at the request of ETH President Prof. Lino Guzzella and the schools management due to the high demand for a mobile interface for the ETH website. The web relaunch project has already considered several mobile concepts, which have been incorporated into the new project. The existing ETH app offers synergy potential.

  • The importance of mobile access to the Internet is growing rapidly.
  • Peer institutions have good mobile web solutions.
  • Google now rates mobile content with respect to preparation for mobile phones.

Contents of the mobile web

The goal of the project with regard to a fast deployment and implementation was not to transfer the entire content of the ETH web site to the mobile site. Instead to focus was on including only the most important information which are highly practical for daily use.

Architecture principles

  • Flexibility for sustainable development
  • Compatibility with content from the “normal” web
  • Mobile context in the foreground
  • Automatic feed of the content, no manual feed
  • Access to the desktop version
  • Languages German / English
