{"id":806,"date":"2009-11-27T18:21:58","date_gmt":"2009-11-27T16:21:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wpethzprd.ethz.ch\/id\/?p=806"},"modified":"2009-12-01T10:42:50","modified_gmt":"2009-12-01T08:42:50","slug":"top-500-of-the-worlds-fastest-supercomputer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ethz.ch\/id\/2009\/11\/27\/top-500-of-the-worlds-fastest-supercomputer\/","title":{"rendered":"Top 500 of the world&#8217;s fastest supercomputers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest <a href=\"http:\/\/top500.org\/list\/2009\/11\" target=\"_blank\">Top 500 list<\/a> of the world&#8217;s fastest supercomputers was released last week during the Supercomputing Conference in Portland, Oregon.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to this list, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.id.ethz.ch\/services\/list\/comp_zentral\/cluster\/index_EN\" target=\"_self\">Brutus<\/a><\/strong> is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the 88th supercomputer in the world<\/li>\n<li>the 10th cluster in Europe<\/li>\n<li>the 2nd supercomputer in Switzerland (the 1st is the Cray XT5 at CSCS)<\/li>\n<li>the most energy efficient general purpose supercomputer in the world (see article in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heise.de\/newsticker\/meldung\/AMD-Opteron-erobert-Spitzenposition-der-Supercomputer-857011.html\" target=\"_blank\">heise.de<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two other Swiss academic institutions also made it to the Top 500 list:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>96: University of Zurich (UZH)<\/li>\n<li>99: Ecole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne (EPFL)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Interestingly, the combined performance of Brutus and the systems at UZH and EPFL (149.2 TF) is almost as high as the Cray XT5 at CSCS (168.7 TF).<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: the performance of Brutus was measured using only Sun X6440 nodes, i.e. using only 6464 out of the cluster&#8217;s 8600 cores.
