What are sustainable alternatives and how can we make them appealing to these customers?<\/h3><p>There is common agreement amongst policy makers, mobility planners and scientists that private car mobility with fossil fuels has many negative externalities such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S030626192030533X\">CO<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S030626192030533X\"><sub>2<\/sub><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S030626192030533X\"> emissions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/themes\/human\/noise\">noise<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013935121000487\">lower air quality<\/a>. It is thus imperative to reduce private car mobility with fossil fuels to reach a more sustainable transport system that is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. Technological advances are one of the possibilities to increase sustainability while behavioural aspects can spur or hinder the adoption.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>In particular, electric vehicles fuelled with renewable electricity can lead to considerable CO<sub>2<\/sub> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S030626192030533X\">emissions reductions<\/a>. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are gaining in share of total new car registrations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ev-volumes.com\/country\/total-world-plug-in-vehicle-volumes\/\">around the globe<\/a>. Recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2021\/11\/02\/norway-remains-near-90-plugin-ev-share-even-with-tesla-off-duty-in-october\/\">Norway<\/a> has been the first country to report a share of BEVs on new car registrations of over 70 % and other countries see substantial growth in BEV adoption as well. Yet, half of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2021\/10\/27\/tesla-leads-the-bev-takeover-in-europe-in-september\/\">best-selling BEVs<\/a> are categorized as a SUV or large car and have a range of over 400 km (according to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Worldwide_Harmonised_Light_Vehicles_Test_Procedure\">Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure<\/a>). In view of these developments, it is expected that a substantial share of large BEVs with a high-range battery will be bought in the future.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>However, while switching from a fossil fuel car to a large BEV could reduce CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions drastically, simply replacing current fossil fuel cars with high range BEVs bears <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethz.ch\/energy\/share-mobility\/\">several risks<\/a>. Firstly, since the battery production is responsible for a large part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethz.ch\/energy\/electric-vehicle-sustainability\/\">life cycle emissions<\/a> of BEVs, large BEVs with larger batteries increase the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S095965262102223X\">greenhouse gas footprint<\/a> and the ecosystems affected by extraction processes compared to smaller BEVs. Secondly, the average size and weight of the car has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.repository.cam.ac.uk\/handle\/1810\/312263\">increasing<\/a> considerably during the last decades, leading to higher consumption of raw materials in vehicle production and increased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2590162121000216\">microplastics from tires<\/a> in the use phase of vehicles. Finally, large cars increase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2212012221000241\">fatal pedestrian crashes<\/a>.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>To avoid the above-mentioned risks, the battery size in personal vehicles should reflect the actual need for range in one\u2019s mobility behaviour. Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1361920917310295#b0155\">90% of daily car trips<\/a> could already be conducted with a small BEV with a range of 125km without the need to recharge the car during the day, a majority of households could opt for vehicles with smaller batteries (i.e. smaller car, shorter range) and charge overnight. Specifically, customers tend to <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.researchsquare.com\/files\/rs-722341\/v1_covered.pdf?c=1631874976\">misjudge their actual need for range<\/a> in a car leading to range anxiety with regard to small BEVs. How should new mobility services be designed in order to optimally complement a small BEV and what policies are needed to foster a switch? While carsharing operators could focus on long-range cars (which will increasingly become electric) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1361920921001632\">in agglomerations and rural areas<\/a>, typically characterized by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfs.admin.ch\/bfs\/de\/home\/statistiken\/mobilitaet-verkehr\/personenverkehr\/verkehrsverhalten\/tabellen-2015\/hauptbericht.assetdetail.1840477.html\">larger travel distances<\/a>, public transport providers could diversify their business by including easy access to first-and last-mile solutions (e.g. dedicated parking spaces for <a href=\"https:\/\/guggachpark.ch\/en\/zurimobil-mobility-station\/\">micromobility and carsharing<\/a> close to public transport stops). Further, car ownership as a status symbol might be <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3475381\">decreasing within the newer generations<\/a>, opening the opportunity for mobility service providers to market their wide range of cars as a new status symbol. Car owners might reflect on their mobility needs and whether the range of current small BEV would cover the majority of these needs. <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.researchsquare.com\/files\/rs-722341\/v1_covered.pdf?c=1631874976\">Information campaigns<\/a> could help in reducing this range anxiety. Policy could focus on, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-02760-8\">weight-based fees<\/a> without hindering the uptake of BEVs (e.g. reduced registration fees for BEVs compared to conventional vehicles).
