Die Eröffnung der neuen Metropolitan Opera in New York vor 50 Jahren

Heute vor 50 Jahren am 16. September 1966 wurde in New York die neue Metropolitan Opera eröffnet. Das Gebäude auf der Upper West Side Manhattans ist Teil des Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Die gemeinnützige Institution fördert Musik, Tanz und Theater und wurde zwischen 1955 und 1970 unter der Führung von John D. Rockefeller III aufgebaut. Heute beherbergt das Lincoln Center rund ein Dutzend kulturelle Organisationen mit insgesamt mehr als 6’800 Angestellten.

Die Metropolitan Opera Company wurde 1880 gegründet und ihr erstes Operngebäude befand sich zuerst zwischen der 39. und 40. Strasse am Broadway. Die neue Oper auf dem Gelände des Lincoln Center wurde von Wallace K. Harrison entworfen und verfügt über etwa 3’800 Sitz- und 195 Stehplätze und eine exzellente Akustik. Letztere konnte man allerdings erst testen, als das Gebäude nahezu fertig war:

As completion of the Metropolitan drew near, questions of acoustics were foremost on the minds of management and artists. Their questions could be resolved only by an actual test, with singers on stage, an orchestra in the pit, and an audience in the house. On the afternoon of April 11^th, 1966, a performance of Puccini’s “Girl of the Golden West”, previously scheduled for a full student audience in the old house was shifted to the new one, [Edgar B.] Young met [Rudolph] Bing and [Wallace K.] Harrison as they came out into the foyer. Each was beaming and wore a look of enormous relief on his face. Acoustically, the opera house had passed muster. Word of mouth about the sound in the new house was favorable from that day forward (Young, S. 198).

Nach zehnjähriger Bauzeit eröffnete das neue Opernhaus schliesslich am 16. September 1966 mit der Weltpremiere von Samuel Barber’s Anthony and Cleopatra.
