Das Bild aus dem Bestand der Fotoagentur Comet zeigt Charles Chaplin bei seinem 72. Geburtstag am 16. April 1961 im Park des Manoir de Ban in Corsier bei Vevey. Der gebürtige Brite und längere Zeit in den USA lebende Filmstar und Produzent hatte das stattliche Anwesen 1953 erworben und lebte dort mit seiner Familie bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1977.

In seinen Memoiren, die er in den frühen 60er Jahren verfasste, betonte er mehrmals, dass er sich in der Schweiz sehr wohl fühlte:
Friends have asked me if I miss the United States – New York? In candour I do not. America has changed, so has New York.The gigantic scale of industrial institutions, of press, television and commercial advertising has completely divorced me from the American way of life. I want the other side of the coin, a simpler personal sense of living… (My autobiography, S. 523).
With such happiness, I sometimes sit out on our terrace at sunset and look over a vast green lawn to the lake in the distance, and beyond the lake to the reassuring mountains, and in this mood think of nothing and enjoy their magnificent serenity (My autobiography, S. 528).
2015 soll im Manoir de Ban ein Chaplin-Museum eröffnet werden. Dieses wird neben der Ausstellung von Briefen, Bildern, Filmmaterial und Objekten auch ein Kulturzentrum mit Wechselausstellungen und ein Kino beherbergen.
