Last Monday, I successfully presented my research plan during my aptitude colloquium and have been officially admitted to ETH Zurich as a doctoral student. I had to present the motivation for my research in the context of the current research landscape, make an argument for my research questions and objectives and why the proposed approach is suitable to answer these questions. I shall try my best to replicate my reasoning with as little jargon as possible here.
