Promoting ethics and scientific integrity within D-BAUG

Consolidating the students’ input from the course “Ethics and scientific integrity of doctoral students at D-BAUG”, the following five points encapsulate key values and strategies that can enhance D-BAUG’s commitment to ethics and scientific integrity in our academic culture and daily activities:

  1. Digital Ethics Platform: Implement a confidential online platform where members can pose ethical queries to knowledgeable experts, offering the ability to discuss complex issues without fear of reprisal.
  2. Ethics Education: Integrate ethics education throughout all educational levels. Make courses available to everyone, including faculty, with Moodle as a possible platform. This would also include presentations and lectures held each semester to ensure continuous awareness and education.
  3. Community Engagement: Organize activities such as general assemblies, workshops, and open forums to create an engaged and informed community. Discuss anonymized real-life cases, highlighting historical incidents within ETH and D-BAUG. Events like these could foster open conversations and empower members to make ethical decisions.
  4. Transparent Procedures and Consequences: Actively communicate instances of ethical violations and their respective consequences. This transparency could effectively deter unethical conduct by demonstrating the severe repercussions that such behavior can yield.
  5. Group Accountability: Encourage every research group to include ethics training and awareness in their onboarding process. Supervisors can be made responsible for familiarizing new team members with regulations, responsibilities, and rights, further nurturing an environment of collective responsibility for upholding ethical standards.

By implementing these strategies, we can ensure that our department prioritizes and upholds ethics and scientific integrity at all times.
