With upcoming climate change the habitats of species shift and the spatial\ndistribution of alpine biodiversity is changing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can researchers predict if protected areas\ncan uphold conservation goals under these changing conditions? How can\npolicymakers decide if they need to update the boundaries of existing protected\nareas or if new ones need to be created in specific areas to conserve alpine\nbiodiversity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Policymakers rely on modeling tools that allow\nthem to identify priority areas for the expansion of\nthe existing ones based on priority goals, global change scenarios and\npolitical costs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers from Switzerland<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> additionally integrated species richness and species distribution model predictions for four taxonomic groups in the Western Swiss Alps under present and future climate and land-use scenarios into these existing tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They found that that existing protected areas are currently not situated in the most environmentally nor politically suitable locations to represent maximum species richness in the studied taxonomic groups. Further, the current PAs will become even less optimum under the future climate and land-use change scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study\nconcluded that integrating species richness species distribution as well as other\nbiodiversity conservation indices in the current modeling and planning tools\nwill support more effective conservation planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Source:<\/strong> Global Ecology and Conservation, Volume 17,&nbsp;January 2019, e00589.
