Windows XP reaches end of life

Are you still using the Microsoft Windows XP operating system on your laptop (or on a home computer)?

If yes, the following information is important for you since you will be required to take action accordingly.

a) As of April 8th 2014, Microsoft will no longer deliver updates for  Windows XP software.

b) According to the Acceptable Use Policy BOT  and the Guidelines for System Administrators of ETH only computers with the latest security updates are allowed to connect to ETH networks.
Due to missing updates after this date,  your XP computer will be increasingly exposed to Internet attacks and remain without sufficient protection.

With this advance notice we would like to avoid any problems and discussions which might crop up after April 2014. In severe cases, we reserve the right to disable network access for suspicious computers that are not up-to-date.

Right now there still remains sufficient time to plan and implement migration.

  • The following options and contacts are available to help you with migration:
Support queries regarding this topic can be directed to the Service Desk of IT Services (http://www.id.ethz.ch/servicedesk/index_EN ) (phone internal 27777).
  • Need new hardware because your current hardware doesn’t support Windows 7/8 anymore? Until April 2014 www.neptun.ethz.ch offers two windows of opportunity for purchasing a good quality computer at a reasonable price. The next Neptun sales window begins on September 2nd 2013 and will last 4 weeks.

Please remember to inform your colleagues still using Windows XP of these upcoming changes.
