Berlin, November 7, 2019. The symposium "RETHINKING Antibiotics" was held at the Museum für Naturkunde as an event during this year's Berlin Science Week. Antibiotics play a pivotal role in medicine and public health. Since the discovery of penicillin, antibiotic agents have transformed medicine and saved millions of lives worldwide. However, novel antibiotic agents and treatments are urgently needed. Only few new antibiotics have been proven effective against multi-resistant bacteria, leading to an alarming situation where some infections have no cure. Leading experts from ETH Zurich and other institutions presented the latest advances in the field of antibiotics, from miniaturized screening technology and natural selection to the rational design of antimicrobial peptides and small molecules. Methods from the field of artificial intelligence were presented that generated novel antibiotic agents "de novo".
